Macmillan Cancer Care Centre unveiled at York Hospital

Macmillan Cancer Support and the Trust have together unveiled a £2.1m project for a Cancer Care Centre.

The new ‘gold standard’ centre is designed to provide vital information and support for people living with cancer and will be developed at York Hospital’s Magnolia Centre, thanks to a new partnership with the charity.

The Cancer Care Centre will be operated by the existing Cancer Health and Wellbeing Support Service and provide information and support on a range of issues, from coping with treatment and care to getting financial support.  It will be open to people affected by cancer across the region.

Nurses awarded by the Queen's Nursing Institute

Two York nurses received a great start to the New Year after being awarded for their innovative nursing project.

Geraldine Rook and Stefanie Barnish, who collectively have almost 70 years of experience working in the NHS, collected their award at the annual Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI) awards ceremony in London.

The pair attended the formal QNI award ceremony to receive certificates from Professor Dame Elizabeth Anionwu, QNI Vice President and Patron of the Mary Seacole Trust.

They received their awards in the Community Nursing Innovation Programme category, after being nominated for improving continence outcomes for residents in a care home in York.

National birth study launches

The ‘Born and Bred In’ study, known as ‘BaBi,’ has been launched by Trust researchers.

Every mother who gives birth in the Trust will now be invited by midwives to join the study.  Last year over 4,400 babies were born in the region.

The team will be looking to highlight health, care, and education trends and challenges for children and families.  The concept first began in Bradford, where it is part of the world leading ‘Born in Bradford’ research programme.  With consent from pregnant women, routine data recorded by the various services, including healthcare and education, are joined together anonymously.  This helps to create a bigger picture of local people’s health.

New drug offered to Trust patient in first worldwide clinical study

Researchers at the Trust have achieved a global first by participating in a clinical study helping patients with a rare condition.

Trust doctors were the first to recruit a patient for the global study called AvacoStar. Patients are now able to take Avacopan, which is given to patients with a disease called ANCA-associated Vasculitis (AAV).

AAV is a type of inflammation of the small blood vessels, most often affecting the kidneys and the lungs.  Patients will be proposed to enrol in the study which has been supported by the NIHR Clinical Research Network (CRN).

Mobile phone charge boxes

York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity has funded three mobile device charging units at York and Scarborough hospitals.

The units provide free, fast charging for all mobile devices and can be used by staff, patients, and visitors.  The chargers are easy to use and are located at York Hospital main reception, York Hospital emergency department, and Scarborough Hospital emergency department.

To use, simply open an available locker, plug your device into the correct charging cable, lock the door, and leave your device to charge.  Since the charge boxes were installed a month ago, over 2,000 phones have been charged across the three units.
