New emergency department expansion opens at York Hospital

York Hospital’s £18 million expanded and redesigned emergency department was officially opened by Margaret Locker on 7 July 2023. Margaret is a senior sister in York’s emergency department and has served over 52 years with our Trust.

The two-storey expansion, which took just 20 months to complete, includes a vital new eight-bedded resuscitation area and twelve new assessment and treatment cubicles.  There is also a newly remodelled waiting area which contains a separate children’s area and supporting facilities such as a nappy changing area.

Upstairs in the extension there is a spacious area for same-day emergency care where patients will be treated in the department and then discharged without the need to be admitted as an inpatient.

Celebrating 75 years of the NHS

On Wednesday 5 July, the NHS marked 75 years of service. When it was founded in 1948, it was the first universal health system to be available to all, free at the point of delivery.

Celebratory events and activities took place across the country, including plenty at our Trust. Catch up with our NHS 75 celebrations.

Trust has leading liver service, it's official!

The Trust has gained national recognition for its liver service, giving ‘high quality care’ to its patients.

We’re proud to have been awarded the Improving Quality in Liver Services (IQILS) Level 2 accreditation by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP).

Based at York Hospital, our liver service is one of just a small number to have been accredited in England, Wales and Northern Ireland after the scheme was launched in July 2017 by the RCP to improve quality in liver services.
