June 2023

The NHS is turning 75!

On Wednesday 5 July the NHS marks 75 years of service. When it was founded in 1948, it was the first universal health system to be available to all, free at the point of delivery.

Celebratory events and activities will take place over next few weeks, and people across the country, including NHS staff, are invited to join in and mark the past, present, and future of the NHS.

Light up blue for NHS75

On the evening of 5 July, over 100 buildings, NHS sites, historic monuments, and other high profile sites across the country are signed up to ‘light up’ blue.

As part of the festivities, York Hospital will be lighting up blue to mark this historic occasion, along with other sites around the area, including City of York, York University and Scarborough Castle.

People are encouraged to take photos and share them on social media using the hashtags #NHS75 and #LightUpBlue. Don't forget to tag the Trust if you spot one of our sites in York or Scarborough.

The Big Tea is back

You are invited to York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity’s NHS75 Big Tea party, supported by York Mix.

The event is taking place on Wednesday 5 July from 10 am to 3 pm at St Crux Church Hall in York, and entry is free. Pop in for a cuppa and slice of cake to support your local hospital and celebrate the 75th birthday of the NHS. We hope to see you

there!

parkrun for the NHS

NHS England has teamed up with parkrun UK to host ‘parkrun for the NHS’ on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 July.

This is an opportunity for parkruns and their local communities to acknowledge the huge contribution that the NHS makes to the health of the nation and celebrate all the staff and volunteers, past and present, who have made the NHS what it is.

Thousands of people are expected to run, jog or walk 5km in NHS blue or fancy

dress. You can also volunteer or just come along to spectate and soak up the

atmosphere.

For all the latest information on ‘parkrun for the NHS’ visit www.england.nhs.uk/parkrun or click here to find an event near you.

Photography exhibition

The NHS teamed up with Fujifilm to launch a photography exhibition displaying the work of NHS staff and volunteers.

75 shortlisted photographs will be displayed at an exhibition at Fujifilm House of Photography in Covent Garden from 5 July. Ruth Clegg, Theatre Practitioner/ODP at York Hospital, is among the shortlisted candidates.

The collection of images includes a patient playing a violin while undergoing brain surgery, a pharmacy robot, air ambulances, and the COVID-19 vaccination effort.

Westminster Abbey service

A service for NHS staff, volunteers, and partners will take place on 5 July at Westminster Abbey.

We’re delighted that five members of staff from our Trust have been chosen to attend the event, where Amanda Pritchard, the Prime Minister, and Keir Starmer will speak.
