Trust marks Organ Donation week with new sculpture

A new sculpture has been installed at York Hospital to mark Organ Donation week and all the families, both past and present, who have been involved in the amazing gift of organ donation.

It has been designed to encourage a moment of reflection for staff, visitors and patients, creating a centre piece for the wellbeing garden space.

The sculpture, by local artist Dan Savage and funded by York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity, features birds and is designed as a continuation of the Wings of Hope sculptures at York and Scarborough hospitals.

Dr Rob Ferguson, Clinical Lead for Organ Donation commissioned the artwork: “This sculpture is a way of thanking and recognising those who have made that decision for themselves and for their family that they wish their organs to be donated, to go on to potentially save up to nine lives.

“The idea of the birds representing the movement of organs from donor to recipient and the inspiring words will also hopefully raise awareness around organ donation."
The organ donation team at the Trust supports families with their decisions, at what can be a difficult time.

Scarborough new build

Trust members can now take a virtual tour of the new Urgent, Emergency Care facility planned for Scarborough Hospital.
This is an exciting £47 million pound project to build the new facility to offer high quality modern facilities and designed to create the best environment to care for our patients.

The new hospital is scheduled to open early 2024 but before we can start building on our hospital site, we need to go through several cycles of detailed planning, working closely with the Department of Health and Social Care, health partners and staff, patients, communities and local stakeholders.  This process will ensure our estate is able to support the delivery of high quality care for our local populations both now and in the future, and that it meets the needs of our clinical teams, healthcare professionals and workforce.

Our final business case approval is due in January 2022 - after which we can progress our plans to build a new vision of healthcare on the East Coast.  Visit https://lnkd.in/dK5pq39t to take the virtual tour

Prize winning sunflower display highlights heart failure

A team of nurses from York are celebrating after winning a national competition to grow the tallest sunflower in the country.  The prize-winning sunflower is part of a display bringing a bit of extra sunshine into people’s lives as well as raising awareness of heart failure.

The national winner of the tallest sunflower competition was keen gardener Paula Smith, Heart Failure Specialist Nurse, with a sunflower measuring 9ft 5in. Runner up goes to Stuart Self, Chief Cardiac Physiologist with his sunflower measuring 8ft 10in.

Heart failure is associated with high hospital admission rates which in turn creates huge cost pressures for our NHS. However, very few people know what heart failure actually is and that if it is diagnosed early, many treatments can be prescribed which improve survival rates, improve symptoms and reduce the risk of hospitalisation. The more people know about heart failure brings hope of better diagnosis and management of this condition.

If you would like to know more about heart failure visit www.pumpingmarvellous.org. Anyone with concerns about the symptoms of heart failure should contact their GP

NHS 111

Our emergency departments at York and Scarborough hospitals are extremely busy at the moment.  If you do not need urgent medical attention, this might not be the best place for you and you may be waiting a long time.

Please help us by using alternative services to get the treatment you need.  If you are unsure of which NHS service you need, contact NHS 111 first by phoning 111, or online www.111.nhs.uk to get the right care in the right place.
