Ground breaking research

A study, published in the Journal of Virology, completed in collaboration the Trust and Public Health England (PHE) has shown that multiple commercially available mouthwashes reduce the level of SARS-CoV-2 in a laboratory setting.
Healthcare professionals are at an increased risk of infection by SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, in part due to working in close proximity to patient’s airways.  Researchers at the Trust and PHE wanted to establish if using a pre-procedural mouthwash reduces that risk.

The teams, involving Mr David Seymour and Mr Peter Nixon from York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Dr Marian Killip of Public Health England, have shown multiple over the counter mouthwashes do reduce levels of SARS-CoV-2 in a laboratory setting.  The best performing mouthwashes will now be taken forward and used in a randomised controlled clinical trial to see how effective the mouthwashes are in patients and how long their effect lasts

York doctor’s journey from war torn Syria to fighting Covid

A recent request to the Trust press office from national media highlighted the dramatic story of York Hospital doctor Mohamad Kajouj and his journey from being bombed in a hospital in war torn Syria to caring for Covid patients at York Hospital.

Visiting restrictions

From Monday 17 May the Trust is easing some visiting restrictions.

From this date, one named visitor will be able to visit a relative or friend by booking a slot of up to an hour with the relevant ward. This visitor should be someone from the patient’s household or relevant support bubble.  There remain exceptions for those patients at the end of their life.

The visitor must be the same person for the duration of the patient’s stay and cannot be swapped between different family members or friends.  This will help reduce the risk of transmission of the virus.

Please visit our website for details of the most up to date guidance, which we continue to keep under review

State-of-the-art lockers head to Bridlington Hospital

New specially designed bedside lockers have been introduced at Bridlington Hospital, thanks to the generosity of local people.

A three year project by the Trust to design bedside lockers that would be accessible, practical and easier for patients has seen thirty-six new lockers installed at the hospital.

York Teaching Hospital Charity has donated £180,792, almost two thirds of the cost of the project, which will bring long lasting benefits to patients for years to come.

The project has involved input from across the organisation including infection prevention, pharmacy, estates and wards, and has included feedback from patients.
