Trust appoints new Chair

Martin Barkley has been appointed as the new Chair of York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The appointment was made and confirmed by the Trust’s Council of Governors, with Martin taking the role from 1 November 2023.

Martin succeeds Interim Chair Mark Chamberlain, who will return to his role as a Non-executive Director on the Integrated Care Board of Humber and North Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership.

Martin said: “I am delighted to be joining the Trust as its Chair, supporting the improvement journey the Trust is on.

“I am absolutely committed to carrying out my role to help ensure the Trust is a great place to work and to receive care. The patient experience and staff experience are of fundamental importance.

“At the same time, the Trust has a crucial role, alongside our health and care partners, to contribute to reducing health inequalities and to improving the social determinants of health in the communities we serve.”

New dementia admiral nurses making Trust history

The Trust recently welcomed three new specialist nurses, recruited to help support patients living with dementia.

The new team is made up of a Lead Admiral Nurse and two admiral nurses. Admiral nurses are registered nurses with specialist knowledge of dementia care. They provide support to family carers and people living with dementia.

As part of our Trust’s ongoing support for people living with dementia, we’ve also recently refreshed the implementation of John’s Campaign, centring on the development of a standard operating procedure for staff, the introduction of care partner cards, and updated information leaflets for carers visiting under the campaign.

Carers carrying the visiting card can also now access free parking at our hospital sites.

Positive changes at breastfeeding clinics

Based on patient feedback, the Trust’s breastfeeding clinics have seen an improvement in services this summer, bettering patient experience, especially for infants born with tongue tie.

After a previous reduction due to Covid, the breastfeeding clinic and tongue tie services have both been reinstated. Sandie McEwan, Maternity Support Worker, has joined us to help with demand at the York breastfeeding clinic, which now also has its own dedicated clinical room. This has created extra appointments and reduced waiting time for new mums.

The next big step for the weekly breastfeeding clinic is to provide a tongue tie division service at Scarborough. Julie Stones, IBCLC lactation consultant, said: “We are really committed to reducing healthcare inequalities and we’re expecting we’ll be able to provide a clinic in 2024 avoiding the inconvenience of travelling to York.”

Scarborough Urgent and Emergency Care Appeal

Thanks to the generous support of local businesses and individuals, York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity has now raised over £227,000 of the £400,000 target for The Scarborough Urgent and Emergency Care Appeal.

Charity supporters have been busy taking part in sponsored events to help raise funds, and a number of businesses have pledged their support through the appeal’s Business Club.

If you are interested in supporting the appeal in any way, please visit www.scarboroughuecappeal.co.uk or contact the team on 01904 724521 to find out more.
