York emergency department build reaches significant milestone

York Hospital has marked a significant milestone in the building of its £18m Emergency Department upgrade by completing its roof.

The milestone was celebrated with a ‘watertight’ event, signifying that work can now begin on the interior of the new development. As part of the celebration, our Chief Executive, Simon Morritt, and staff from York’s Emergency Department were given a tour of the space.

Simon said:  “This is an exciting landmark in the project to expand and reconfigure our urgent and emergency care facilities at York Hospital.

“This multi-million pound investment to develop a brand new two-storey extension and eight bedded resuscitation area to the Emergency Department will increase capacity and improve care for patients. It is a crucial step closer to providing this much-needed improvement.

“We are really starting to see it taking shape and it was fantastic to walk around and begin to visualise the huge difference this will make for staff and patients.”

The project is expected to be complete in the spring of 2023 and operational by May.

Nucleus roll-out complete

Nucleus, the ground-breaking new software system that’s revolutionising the admission process for hospital inpatients is now live in all 44 inpatient units.

The software has been developed in house using ideas and feedback from staff and can be used on handheld devices to help reduce duplication of work and help deliver better care for adult inpatients. Ultimately it means more time for staff to care for patients.

Nic Coventry, Chief Nursing Information Officer, said: “We’re delighted with the response from staff to using the new system. It facilitates a much quicker admission process and is recorded in real time meaning we can at a glance know what care has been delivered and what still needs to be done.  This has already proven to be successful in reducing the time taken to document findings, while also freeing up time to care for patients.”

If you happen to see our staff using phones or tablets on the wards, don't worry! It's just our new software in action.

New maternity service keeping babies and families together

A new Neonatal Transitional Care Unit has opened at York Hospital, meaning small or premature babies requiring extra care can stay with their mothers in hospital.

Previously, these babies were admitted to a neonatal unit, separate to their mothers. Staying with their mothers for this care has been nationally recognised to provide significant benefits to mums and their babies, including improving bonding and infant feeding while reducing depression.

Our neonatal and maternity teams have worked for several years to develop the best service possible and we are extremely proud to be offering transitional care.

Trust team scoops audiology award

The Trust’s audiology team has been given top honours at the recent British Academy of Audiology Awards at the organisation’s national conference.

The prize is awarded to a team who has worked together to improve the quality of service in their area.  The team’s welcoming student-friendly approach inspired one their audiology students to nominate them for the prestigious award.

The nomination refers to the cohesion, relentless spirit and selflessness shown by the team throughout the pandemic  and highlights the high standard of care delivered by a team stretched over a large geographical area across multiple sites. They are described as ‘a team full of amazing characters and leaders at all bands, but beyond this, a group of friendly faces that epitomise audiology across all spectrums’.

The award was presented by Professor Tim Briggs, Chair of the Veteran Covenant Healthcare Alliance (VCHA) and national lead in recognition of NHS organisations who provide the best standards of care for the Armed Forces Community.

Richard said: “The Trust’s accreditation is something to be very proud of and a partnership that will grow and go from strength to strength.

NHS App changes

The NHS App is fast becoming the digital ‘front door’ to the NHS, with new features for patients to view and manage their hospital appointments.

With over 29 million people signed-up, the NHS App is a key tool in getting information directly into the hands of patients.

In participating Trusts across England, NHS App users will be able to view all of their primary and secondary care appointments in one place, see a single point of contact for their appointments, access supporting information, and book, change or cancel their hospital appointments.
