York & Scarborough Hospitals Business Club

On Thursday 26 January, local news outlets and business owners were invited to take a tour of the new £47m Urgent and Emergency Care Centre at Scarborough Hospital.

The centre, which opens in less than 400 days, has been described by Alan Downey, our Chair, as a “project of national significance”.

The event on Thursday marked the launch of the York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity’s Business Club – a partnership between the charity and Scarborough Business Ambassadors – where businesses can commit to raising £1,000 in 2023 to support the Scarborough Urgent and Emergency Care Appeal.

York Hospital Emergency Department on track

The £18m project to extend and reconfigure the Emergency Department (ED) at York Hospital is on track to open later this year.

The project recently marked a significant milestone in its construction with the completion of the roof and external walls of the building.

The two-storey extension includes a vital new eight-bedded resuscitation area that will increase capacity significantly, with a dedicated space for children. There will be twelve new assessment and treatment cubicles, and a safe room for mental health patients.

Jamie Todd, Associate Chief Operating Officer for York Emergency Department, said: “We are working hard to minimise disruption and are very grateful to the Trust’s staff and patients for their patience during the construction phase of the project - we are sure that the new facilities will be more than worth it!”

British Society of Interventional Radiology (BSIR) Exemplar status

Our Interventional Radiology Unit (VIU) has been awarded exemplar status for the first time. BSIR Exemplar sites are departments that have demonstrated a commitment to the development of high-quality interventional radiology services.

The achievement comes after a lot of hard work and dedication by the clinical leads and their wider teams. It’s an excellent achievement for the Trust’s status as a vascular centre and positive news for our reputation, recruitment, and retention.

Look after your lungs

Visitors to York Community Stadium recently were greeted by a 12ft high pair of giant lungs, courtesy of the Roy Castle Lung Foundation and York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity, to highlight lung health and to raise awareness of lung cancer.

York Hospital’s lung cancer specialist nursing team invited visitors to step inside the ‘Mega Lungs’ to learn more about how the lungs work and find out more about the symptoms of lung cancer and local stop smoking services.

With help smokers are three times more likely to quit for good. Anyone looking for advice and support to stop smoking can contact CYC Health Trainers.

Charity challenges in 2023

York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity’s 2023 calendar of events is now available. It features a wide range of fun challenges to get involved in and support the charity, including ‘Get Caked’ - the muddiest challenge in East Yorkshire, the Yorkshire Marathon, and even a sky dive.
