July 2024

Head and shoulders shot of Martin.A message from our Chair

Recently I had the pleasure of welcoming donors to a preview event of our amazing new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre at Scarborough Hospital. About 75 individuals attended, all of whom had made generous contributions to the public fundraising appeal to provide extras that will enhance what it is like for patients, relatives, and staff in the new facility.

The ambition was to raise £400,000 (to be matched by York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity) and I am delighted to report that this has been exceeded by £28,000. Local businesses and the people of Scarborough have been so generous. The new Centre provides a truly world class environment.

The building will be handed over from the building contractor to the Trust in August, with the first patient moves taking place mid-September and the Emergency Department and Urgent Treatment Centre coming into use early October. At a cost of nearly £50million, it is the largest investment the Trust has managed.

Whilst the Centre is so impressive, it is the people who work there that make the real difference. The teams I have met have a real “can do” attitude and do great work in their present environment, despite it not being fit for purpose any longer due to the enormous growth there has been in the number of people who attend the Emergency Department and Urgent Treatment Centre each week. This new environment really will enable the teams who work in the Centre to fulfil their ambitions for the patients they treat.

Every three months, NHS staff are asked to complete a survey which asks questions about what it feels like to work in their Trust. This short survey known as the “Pulse Survey” takes place three times a year, and once a year a very comprehensive survey with 80 questions known as the “Annual Staff Survey” also takes place. The Board recently received the results of the latest Pulse survey and they were very concerning. There is no doubt that the gap between demand for the services we provide and our capacity to meet that demand is having a major negative impact on morale, a lot of which is beyond our control. But there are also other things impacting morale which we can, must, and will improve as quickly as we can.

I am truly delighted to report that one of our Governors, Sally Light, was awarded an OBE in the recent King’s Birthday Honours list for services for people with Motor Neurone Disease. Sally served as the Chief Executive of the MND Association, a charity and membership organisation supporting people who are living with MND, for ten years until stepping down last year. Previously, Sally spent 25 years working in the NHS in various clinical and managerial roles, including serving on the Board of Barnsley Hospital Trust. Most of her NHS career was spent working with clinical teams to improve patient experience and the way services are delivered. A truly well-deserved award - I could not be more pleased for her. Sally is a public Governor in the York constituency who sadly is standing down in September as she completes her second term.

Governors are either elected by member of the Trust or appointed by appropriate stakeholder partners, which includes nominated representatives from the Local Authority, University, and other partner organisations.

You can read all about your local governors on our website. If you would like to contact any of the governors, email [email protected], including the name of the governor you wish to contact.

The next meeting takes place on Wednesday 11 September.
