September 2022

Celebrating the achievements of our staff

For the first time in three years, staff from across the Trust gathered to publicly recognise colleagues who have gone over and above in their work.

Over 300 staff and guests attended the ‘Celebration of Achievement Awards’ at a glittering ceremony at York Racecourse - the first time since the start of the Covid pandemic.

The event is fully funded by sponsorship and showcases the excellent work taking place throughout the organisation. Individuals and teams are nominated by their own colleagues, and by patients who have been on the receiving end of great care.

Picking up top awards for going above and beyond were healthcare staff from hospitals and community teams as well as scientists, volunteers, recruitment and charity supporters.

Two new categories were introduced this year to recognise the incredible challenges the NHS faced throughout the pandemic. The Team of the Year award went to the Covid wards for their strength and resilience and ‘can do’ approach to overcoming barriers.

A special Chief Executive’s award was presented to the York and Scarborough Covid vaccination hubs. Volunteers, retired staff, and those who were redeployed, worked with the many people who took on this task additional to their normal job, working in uncharted territory to carry out mass vaccination on an unprecedented scale.

Organ Donation Week

26 September to 2 October was Organ Donation Week and staff at the Trust called on people to talk to their families and register their donation decision.

In Yorkshire and the Humber, 231 people benefited from a solid organ transplant in 2021/22. 11 of these donations were facilitated at the Trust, saving the lives of 25 local people.

Even though the law around organ donation has now changed across England, Scotland and Wales, family members are always consulted before organ donation goes ahead. This means it is still as important as ever to register your decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register and ensure your friends and family know what you want.

The Trust supported the campaign by sharing a film produced by the Organ Donation team, featuring the stories of people whose lives have been impacted. To watch the film, click here.

Dr James Turvill appointed as Honorary Professor at Hull York Medical School

Congratulations to Dr James Turvill, Consultant Gastroenterologist at the Trust, who has been appointed as Honorary Professor at Hull York Medical School.

In acknowledgement of his new role, Dr Turvill said, “Despite the challenges facing us at the moment, all of us who work at York and Scarborough NHS Foundation Trust aspire to provide the best possible care for our patients and the community we serve.

“When research becomes embedded into the fabric of a Trust, patient outcomes improve. This is because research can support a Trust in overcoming workforce, quality and safety challenges and so support capacity and activity recovery.

For a number of years now, the life of the Trust has been enriched by HYMS medical students. In the coming years I am hopeful that, in the same way, research will become part of the normal life of staff and patients at the Trust, that this will bring sustained benefit and come to be one of the defining strengths of our organisation.”

NHS Carol Concert at York Minster returns

It’s that time of year again - time to think beyond the sun cream and shades and save the date for the NHS Carol Concert at York Minster!

This year the much-loved concert takes place on Wednesday 30 November, and heralds the start of Christmas for many.  It features a choir of NHS staff from across the region and once again will be conducted by Dr Andrew Padmore.

The concert is back to full capacity, with seating for around 2,000 people at York Minster, after it was scaled down last year for social distancing due to the pandemic.

Booking is not required this year, simply turn up on the day. Doors open at 6.30 pm for a 7.30 pm start.
