Consultation begins on changes to sexual health service

The way sexual health services are provided in North Yorkshire is due for an update and a public consultation is underway on proposals which could be put into place next spring.

Since 2015, those highly rated services have been delivered through YorSexualHealth, provided by our Trust.  The current arrangements perform well, compared to similar areas in the country, ranking second from a league table of 16.  The formal agreements for providing those services, financed by North Yorkshire County Council, are reviewed periodically and it is proposed from April next year a new partnership will be established between North Yorkshire and the Trust to provide that service for at least the next four years.

The County Council’s Executive is being asked to approve proposals and arrangements which could see a new legal agreement between the two.  Nationally, the public health grant is reducing, so that means the County Council will have less public health money available.  The council has been reviewing the service with us, taking into account the changing way people have been using the service as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Read the full proposals about changes to the sexual health service and fill in the survey.  The survey will be available between 4 August 2021 and 4 October 2021.

Patients Know Best

From September the Trust will be offering patients the opportunity to sign up to our new online service that gives patients secure access to their health record from any smartphone, tablet or computer.

It’s designed to improve patient experience and access to NHS services and information.  It’s a bit like online banking, but instead, patients can use it to manage their health.

Patients of the Trust will be able to initially view some hospital letters, monitor their health condition and track their symptoms, and share their entire record with anyone caring for them such as family members, carers and health professionals.

In the near future patients will also be able to view appointments online, see test results, details of any allergies and current or previous medications and access care plans and other resources to help manage their care safely at home.

The service is provided in partnership with Patients Know Best (PKB).  Further information can be found on our website, along with some frequently asked questions.

Parents urged to look out for sever respiratory infections in young children

Parents are being urged to look out for signs of severe respiratory infections among young children amid a rise in out-of-season cases.

Health services, which are particularly busy as they juggle the demands of COVID-19 and increasing demand for everyday treatment, have started to see an increase in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cases among children this summer, although the yearly outbreak usually begins in late autumn and peaks during winter.  Read the article in full on our website.

Building for the future

From late August the ‘South Entrance’ to York Hospital will be closed to everyone, with the exception of certain staff groups, and those patients coming to the emergency department.

This is part of essential works for the new emergency department and will last for the duration of the project build.

If you'd like to take a sneak peek at the project, see our website for a virtual flythrough of the new emergency department extension.

Staying physically active #WhatsMyNextStep

To help rebuild the fitness that many of us have lost during lockdown, why not try to build more activity into your day?

Health and activity experts from York and North Yorkshire have put together the following ideas to help improve muscle tone, build core strength and improve balance.

Before starting any new activities or exercises, please remember:

  • Follow any medical advice you’ve been given
  • Do what you can and start slowly.  It’s fine to push yourself a little, but don’t do anything that feels uncomfortable
  • Stop if you feel any pain or are lightheaded, and rest and stay hydrated
  • A little soreness after exercise is normal for the first day or two.

Watch these simple ideas to build fitness at home from staff member Vicky Mulvana-Tuohy at York Hospital:

Members' event: Organ Donation

NHS 111

Our emergency departments at York and Scarborough hospitals are extremely busy at the moment.  If you do not need urgent medical attention, this might not be the best place for you and you may be waiting a long time.

Please help us by using alternative services to get the treatment you need.  If you are unsure of which NHS service you need, contact NHS 111 first by phoning 111, or online www.111.nhs.uk to get the right care in the right place.
