Mouthwash COVID trial

The Research Team at York Hospital are looking for volunteers to take part in their clinical trial to see whether using mouthwash can inactivate the COVID-19 virus.
A previous study between the Trust and Public Health England (PHE) has proven that multiple commercially available mouthwashes reduce the level of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, in a laboratory setting.  This trial is to investigate how well the mouthwashes perform in the real world and how long the effects last for.
The trial is open to anyone over the age of 16 years, who have received a positive PCR test for COVID-19 in the last 72 hours.

The trial, at York Hospital, invites volunteers to rinse their mouth using a mouthwash and then provide saliva samples at different times during a one hour period. These samples are then analysed to see if the COVID-19 virus is present and at what levels.

If you can give an hour to help with this important research, contact the Research Team by calling 07342 062 512 or emailing [email protected] to arrange an appointment.

Good Business Charter

The Trust has been accredited under the Good Business Charter, making us the first NHS trust nationally.

The Good Business Charter has been developed in partnership with the Confederation of British Industry, the Trades Union Congress and Federation of Small Businesses and promotes responsible behaviour through ten key components, including employee wellbeing, diversity and inclusion, environmental responsibility and ethical sourcing.

York has become the first city in the UK to sign up to the Good Business Charter.  Key organisations in the city of York who have signed up to the charter include the City of York Council, the University of York, Aviva, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and the Trust.

Simon Morritt, Chief Executive of the Trust, said: “I am delighted that we are the first NHS trust nationally to be recognised and accredited by the Good Business Charter, which demonstrates the values that we believe in and our commitment to responsible and good business practices.”

The search for new governors continues...

The Trust is looking to recruit new public governors to help influence the future of its health services.

If you are interested in becoming a governor and would like to become the ‘voice’ of local people, you can find out more by visiting our Council of Governors page, or by emailing [email protected]
.

Fond farewell to Lead Governor

The Trust’s Lead Governor, Margaret Jackson, is stepping down as lead governor after serving a full term of nine years.

Margaret takes a moment to reflect on her time with the Trust and to thank everyone who has supported and assisted her over the years.  You can read and download her reflection on the Trust’s website

Our thanks go to Margaret from everyone at the Trust for her tireless efforts and ongoing support throughout the years.  We wish you well for the future.

A new name and look for the Trust charity

From 26 July 2021 and following a rebrand, York Teaching Hospital Charity will become York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity.

The charity raises money to support all hospitals and community teams across our Trust. With the help of supporters and donors, they can fund the extras to improve healthcare facilities above and beyond the NHS.  Their aim remains the same, to support staff and patients in our hospitals to make the hospital experience the best it can be for all who visit and stay there.

You can get in touch by visiting their website or by emailing them [email protected].

Non-executive director opportunities

We are looking to appoint two new people to our Board: a Non-Executive Director and an Associate Non-Executive Director.  To find out more visit: www.join-yorkhospitals.com.

Hospital guidance set to continue

Staying safe never changes, so we are continuing to ask all patients and visitors to wear a mask when coming to our hospitals.  We have very poorly people with us and we want to do all we can to protect them and prevent the spread of COVID-19.  Thank you for your continued support.

NHS 111

Our A&E departments at York and Scarborough hospitals are extremely busy at the moment.  If you do not need urgent medical attention, A&E might not be the best place for you and you may be waiting a long time.

Please help us by using alternative services to get the treatment you need.  If you are unsure of which NHS service you need, contact NHS 111 first by phoning 111, or online www.111.nhs.uk to get the right care in the right place.
