Patients trial revolutionary colon cancer test

People who are referred by their GP to York and Scarborough hospitals with possible bowel cancer may now be offered a revolutionary new test, which could provide a diagnosis within hours.

The hospitals are one of 50 NHS sites to trial miniature cameras which patients can swallow to get checked for cancer.  The imaging technology, known as a colon capsule endoscopy, is concealed in a capsule no bigger than a pill and can help patients access cancer checks at home.

Traditional endoscopies mean patients need to attend hospital and have a tube inserted whereas the new technology means that people can go about their normal day.

The national evaluation of colon capsule endoscopy, which is set to involve many thousands of patients, will be delivered and coordinated by Dr James Turvill pictured above, and the Research and Development team at York Hospital.

Patients Know Best (PKB)

From next month we are giving patients greater control of their health and care information, thanks to a new digital service called Patients Know Best (PKB).

PKB is designed to improve patient experience by offering online access to personal health records.

Initially patients of the Trust will be able to view some hospital letters, monitor their health condition and track their symptoms, and share their entire record with anyone caring for them - such as family members, carers and health professionals.

In the near future they will be able to view appointments online, see test results, details of any allergies and current or previous medications, and communicate with us online using secure messaging.

It’s also good news for health and care teams.  A more accurate, complete and ‘live’ patient health record improves clinical decision-making and access to more personalised care, even in emergencies.  A shared record also means patients will no longer need to duplicate tests for different providers.

Virtual Royal visit

Consultant anaesthetist Amanda Vipond and associate specialist and Covid-19 lead Kim Chandler joined a Zoom call with HRH The Earl of Wessex, along with Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Mrs Johanna Ropner and emergency and civic service leads in North Yorkshire as part of a virtual Royal ‘visit’.  The group shared the challenges that have been faced in North Yorkshire over the past year.

Another breakthrough for Covid drugs trial

The RECOVERY trial, which the Trust has been involved in since March 2020 testing a range of potential treatments for Covid-19, has had a further breakthrough with treatments.

Researchers have recently demonstrated that an anti-inflammatory treatment, tocilizumab, reduces the risk of death when given to hospitalised patients with severe Covid-19.  The study also showed that the drug shortens the time until patients are successfully discharged from hospital and reduces the need for a mechanical ventilator.

Tocilizumab, an intravenous drug used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, was added to the trial in April 2020 for patients with Covid-19 who required oxygen and had evidence of inflammation.

Baby loss

Every year we hold a special service for parents and relatives who have lost a baby. This year you can join our chaplains and bereavement midwife Beverley, in a virtual service of love, thanksgiving and remembrance this Mother’s Day, Sunday 14 March.

More information can be found on our website.

Appointments

If you are invited to any of our hospitals for an appointment, it is important that you still attend.  We understand you may feel nervous about coming into hospital at this time, this short video shows what you can expect and what changes we have in place when coming for your appointment.

Covid fact check

Covid-19 vaccine scams ask for your bank details and personal information are circulating.  The NHS will never ask for your bank details or payment for the Covid-19 vaccine.  Help make the internet safer by reporting these scams to: actionfraud.police.uk.

If you've had the Covid-19 vaccine, it is vital that you continue to follow social distancing guidance.

NHS 111

If you have an urgent health concern, then think 111 first. NHS 111 will direct you to the most appropriate service to use.

Blood taking

The York blood taking service, previously located at the Monks Cross ASDA and then temporarily located at Peppermill Court throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, is now located in its new permanent home at the Community Stadium in York.

The service remains the same - Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm with urgent and non-urgent blood test requests, including booked GP appointments as well as drop in appointments.  Please remember to bring your bloods form with you for your appointment.

The new Community Stadium is on Kathryn Avenue, Monks Cross Drive, Huntington, YO32 9AF which has free parking up to two hours.

Keep in touch with loved ones
