December 2022

Wishing all the best to our members this festive season

As 2022 draws to an end, we’d like to wish our members all the best this festive season, however you celebrate.

To mark the start of the season and lift the spirits of those who attended, the annual carol service, the annual carol service for NHS staff returned for its 43rd year. Staff from around the region were invited to York Minster, taking time out from their busy duties to give thanks and rejoice.

This year, a choir of almost 100 local NHS staff was conducted for the penultimate time by Dr Andrew Padmore, prior to his forthcoming retirement.

If you missed the event, York Hospital Radio will broadcast a recording of the wonderfully festive service on Christmas Eve at 6pm, and Christmas Day at 4pm. Listen via the hospital radio website at www.yorkhospitalradio.com or via mobile app ‘York Hospital Radio’.

Ward 26 opens its doors after refurbishment

Ward 26 at York Hospital, which cares for mostly head and neck and gynaecology patients, has undergone a full refurbishment. It includes new equipment, a new relative’s room for sensitive conversations, and an area for staff to change out of their uniforms.

Katy Maskell, Ward Sister, said: “The changes have helped to improve staff morale and patient care. After becoming a Covid ward a number of times, it’s good to get back to our specialty, and staff are elated with the refurbishment.”

The team enjoyed an official ribbon-cutting ceremony, complete with cake!

New Bridlington clinics reducing travel for patients

A new service has launched at Bridlington Hospital to make it easier for local people when they need an operation at York or Scarborough hospitals.

Prior to having an operation patients need a pre-assessment to make sure they are fit for an anaesthetic and surgery. Until recently these assessment clinics have been held where people are having their surgery at either York or Scarborough hospitals. The new service now means Bridlington patients can have their pre-op bloods, ECGs or Covid PCR testing locally.

This is in addition to the bespoke Orthopaedic pre-assessment service for elective Orthopaedic patients who come to Bridlington Hospital for their surgery.

The Trust has made changes to the management structure to create efficient pre assessment and day units in York, Scarborough, and Bridlington. Surgical specialties are working together to ensure patients receive the necessary information and investigations close to home.

Scarborough ED build latest updates

Anyone who has visited Scarborough Hospital recently will have seen the huge progress made in the Urgent and Emergency Care Centre build. The £47M investment is on programme to deliver a handover to the Trust by Christmas 2023, followed by a structured and phased transition of services into the new building over the following weeks.

Joanne Southwell, Capital Projects Manager, said “On site, the concrete frame is being erected at an extraordinary pace and the scale and size of the building is evident and taking shape. There will be significant site engineering infrastructure upgrades to increase resilience across the site in terms of power, water, drainage, fire, and steam.

“We have reached a phase where there will be more contractors on site, increased deliveries of goods, and extra works for the infrastructure so we are asking people to be patient as there will be disruptions.

“Every effort is being made to keep this to a minimum, but it will affect staff parking and road closures in the coming weeks.”
