York Emergency Department

The multi-million pound development to improve the Emergency Department at York Hospital is well underway and is set to provide much needed extra space and facilities.

The two-storey extension, expected to take around 60 weeks to complete, includes a vital new eight bedded resuscitation area, along with improvements to both the waiting room and the consultation and treatment areas to increase capacity and provide better care for patients.

The current entrance is now closed and a new temporary A&E entrance has been created at the south of the building.  Anyone coming to A&E should continue to use Entrance 1, the main entrance to York Hospital signposted from Wigginton Road, and park in the multi-storey car park.

A new pedestrian exit has been created at the end of the car park (furthest from the barriers) and people are signposted via the green line on the floor around the hospital to the temporary emergency department entrance.

Dr Mike Harkness, Care Group Director for the Emergency Department said: “These exciting changes to our emergency department will mean improvements for initial assessment and faster decision making for patients, as well as creating a much better working environment for staff.

“It includes twelve new assessment and treatment cubicles, where patients will be seen and assessed by a senior member of the team. The children’s waiting and treatment area will be separate from the adult area.

“While this work is underway, understandably there will be some disruption.  On behalf of all the team we would like to thank you for your patience, kindness and understanding during this time.”

All the latest updates and changes to the Emergency Department project will be posted on our website and social media feed, along with signage around the hospital throughout the coming weeks.

Bridlington Hospital surgical services buck the trend

Surgery at Bridlington Hospital has bucked the national trend by continuing despite the pandemic, and is now celebrating their hundredth patient to have a joint replacement operation and go home the same day.

Interim chair

Sue Symington, previous Chair of the Board, left the Trust at the end of November to take up her new role as Chair of Humber, Coast and Vale Health and Care Partnership.  The role has temporarily been filled by interim chair, Jenny McAleese.  Jenny has been a long standing non-executive director with the Trust since 2017.

Jenny is a qualified chartered accountant and brings over 30 years’ experience gained in the private, public and charitable sectors.  From 1997 until her retirement in October 2016 she was chief executive at The Retreat psychiatric hospital in York, and she also has extensive non-executive experience.  Jenny’s combined professional knowledge and her experience as a NED means she is well placed to chair the board until we have recruited a new chair.
