Veterans accreditation

The Trust has been accredited as a Veteran Aware Trust by the Veterans Covenant Healthcare Alliance (VCHA), whose brief is to drive improvements in the quality of care delivered by the NHS to the Armed Forces community.

In a letter from the VCHA’s patron, General Lord Dannatt and its national lead, Prof Tim Briggs CBE, the Trust was congratulated for all the hard work demonstrating the NHS’s commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant.

Polly McMeekin, Director of Workforce and Organisational Development, said: “In 2020 we signed the Armed Forces Covenant where we committed to supporting the Armed Forces community, ensuring that veterans’ healthcare is exemplary. “A significant number of staff in our workforce are ex-Armed Forces and we value their skills and experience. In addition we are proud to have a number of staff who are Reservists, serving the country as well as their local community.”

A new Veterans Aware network allows staff to participate and have a voice as veteran here at the Trust.

Bridlington Hospital awarded for commitment to patient safety

Bridlington Hospital is celebrating after being named as a National Joint Registry (NJR) Quality Data Provider after reaching high quality standards for patient safety.

The NJR monitors the performance of hip, knee, ankle, elbow and shoulder joint replacement operations to improve clinical outcomes primarily for the benefit of patients, but also to support orthopaedic clinicians and industry manufacturers. To achieve the award, hospitals are required to meet a series of six ambitious targets during the audit period 2020/21.  One of the targets is to comply with the NJR’s mandatory national audit, aimed at assessing data completeness and quality within the registry.

Karen Cowley, Associate Chief Operating Officer for Orthopaedics at York and Scarborough Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which runs Bridlington Hospital, said: “Improving patient safety is of the utmost importance and something all staff take very seriously. We’re delighted to be awarded as an ‘NJR Quality Data Provider and fully support the National Joint Registry’s work in facilitating improvement in clinical outcomes and governance for the benefit of joint replacement patients.”

Full details about the NJR’s Quality Data Provider certificate scheme can be found here.

NHS Carol Concert at York Minster returns

It’s that time of year again - time to think beyond the sun cream and shades and save the date for the NHS Carol Concert at York Minster!

This year the much-loved concert takes place on Wednesday 30 November, and heralds the start of Christmas for many.  It features a choir of NHS staff from across the region and once again will be conducted by Dr Andrew Padmore.

Simon Morritt, Chief Executive at York and Scarborough Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust who organise the event, said: “We are delighted once again to be able to invite our NHS colleagues and guests to this wonderful event. The carol concert is a very special occasion and it means a lot to those who attend.  The combination of the spectacular setting of York Minster and the atmospheric singing of the choir really celebrates and honours those who work for the NHS.”

The concert is back to full capacity, with seating for around 2,000 people at York Minster, after it was scaled down last year for social distancing due to the pandemic.
